Announce Results of Unannounced DWI

ALBANY, NY – Albany County STOP DWI and District Attorney P. David Soares announced results of a multi-agency Unannounced DWI checkpoint sweep that took place last Thursday night throughout Albany County and Rensselaer County.

Last Thursday June 8th, following the first ‘Alive at 5’ in Albany, ‘Brown’s Summer Sessions’ in Troy, and ‘Rock the Block’ in Cohoes, multiple unannounced DWI checkpoints were set up throughout Albany County as well as in Rensselaer County. Checkpoints like these will continue throughout the summer months in an effort to keep our roadways as safe as possible.

Results from the Albany County checkpoints indicate that there were over 2,500 people stopped and screened. These stops resulted in (2) arrests for DWI, (3) arrests for Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs, and (1) offense falling under Leandra’s Law where a woman was driving while intoxicated while a 4-month old child was in the vehicle. Other arrests included (4) Unlawful Possession of Marijuana charges, and (1) person who was identified with an open warrant for a previous offense. There were also (8) individuals who indicated to officers that they were designated drivers for the night.

“The goal of these sobriety checkpoints is two-fold – to encourage the public to make smart choices by planning ahead before enjoying a night out, in addition to letting the public know that law enforcement in Albany County will be out there day and night to keep our roadways safe,” commented DA Soares.

Albany County Stop DWI coordinated this effort, and the following agencies participated:
• Albany County Sherriff’s Office
• New York State Police
• Bethlehem Police Department

• Green Island Police Department
• Watervliet Police Department
• Albany County Probation
