Murder Plea in 2014 Coeymans Homicide

ALBANY, NY – District Attorney P. David Soares announced today that BRANDON BIERS, 27, of Coeymans, entered a plea of not responsible by reason of mental disease or defect to the charge of Murder in the Second Degree before the Honorable Thomas A. Breslin in Albany County Supreme Court this morning.

Between May 24th and 25th 2014, BIERS caused the death of his mother by means of strangling her and was subsequently charged with (1) Count of Murder in the Second Degree, a Class A-1 Felony. Since that time BIERS has undergone multiple mental health evaluations by professional experts. Today it was determined that the facts of the case, the New York State Criminal Procedure Law, the opinions of the mental health experts commissioned to examine BIERS, and the interest of justice all dictate the acceptance of a plea of not responsible by reason of mental disease or defect in relation to the charged offense.

BIERS will continue to be held in custody pending further mental health evaluations and hearings. No future appearance dates have been scheduled by the Court at this time.

Assistant District Attorney Shannon Sarfoh, Bureau Chief of the Special Victims Unit, is handling the prosecution of this case.
