Guilty Plea in Domestic Arson Case




ALBANY, NY – District Attorney P. David Soares announced today that CHRISTOPHER SMITH, 28, of Schenectady, pleaded guilty to (1) Count of Arson in the Second Degree, a Class B Felony, before the Honorable William A. Carter in Albany County Court yesterday.

On February 25, 2018, at approximately 10:20 A.M., SMITH entered the home of a person who was known to him on Moore Street in the City of Albany and poured gasoline on the second floor landing. SMITH then intentionally set a fire to the stairwell and left the scene. The blaze was promptly reported and extinguished by the Albany Fire Department. Residents who were home at the time were uninjured.

SMITH faces a sentence of 5 to 10 years in State Prison when sentenced on August 22, 2018.

Deputy Chief Assistant District Attorney Cheryl Fowler is handling the prosecution of this case.
