DA Soares Vows to Protect Workforce

Fraud, Price Gouging, and Wage Theft

Will Not Be Tolerated

ALBANY, NY - In an effort to engage in proactive enforcement of workplace standards, the Albany County District Attorney announced today that his Financial Crimes Unit will be taking special note of cases involving wage theft, employee misclassification, and consumer scams during this current pandemic crisis.

“While we have not received any reports of specific incidents, we need the public to know that abuses of workers’ rights should be reported. By spreading public awareness of this issue and engaging the public for help, we are proactively attempting to protect the safety and well-being of some of our most vulnerable community members who may be hesitant to report workplace safety issues for fear of repercussions. My Financial Crimes Unit remains dedicated to fighting white-collar crimes, and they are standing by to assist police and other agencies when abuses of workers’ rights, minimum wage laws, overtime laws, or safe work conditions are reported,” commented DA Soares.

“All people deserve equitable rules of enforcement, safety, and honest treatment in the workplace. We know that in this area, we have an abundance of unions committed to protecting workers rights, but still many people do not have representation to protect fair workplace standards. We encourage the public to help us protect working-class residents by reporting workplace abuses like wage theft and employee misclassification.”

We also advise the public to remain vigilant in reporting suspected consumer scams, like price gouging, which can undermine the safety and well-being of some of our most vulnerable community members.
