 Arraignment in Albany Murder Case

Indictment Also Alleges Several Acts of Gun 

Violence by Perpetrator


ALBANY, NY -  Albany County District Attorney P. David Soares announced today that an 18-year-old individual from Albany was arraigned this morning before Honorable William A. Carter for his alleged role in several acts of gun violence in the City of Albany.

The alleged offender was indicted by a Grand Jury on counts of (1) Count of Murder in the Second Degree, a Class A-1 Felony, (2) Counts of Attempted Murder in the Second Degree, each Class B Violent Felonies, and (3) Counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree, each Class C Armed Violent Felonies.

An Albany County Grand Jury returned an indictment last week alleging that on June 24, 2020, at approximately 1:24 P.M., while in the area of South Pearl Street and Morton Avenue in the City of Albany, the individual intentionally caused the death of 21-year-old Nyjawaun Thomas of Troy by means of shooting him with an illegally possessed firearm. At the time of the incident the alleged offender was 17 years old. As such, his name and booking photo will not be released at this time.

In addition, the Grand Jury found that on June 23, 2020, at approximately 12:45 P.M., while in the area of 114 Second Avenue in the City of Albany, the offender allegedly fired several rounds from an illegally possessed firearm towards a group of individuals. No injuries were reported.

The Grand Jury also returned charges alleging that on June 8, 2020, at approximately 8:20 P.M., in the area of 107 Central Avenue in the City of Albany, the offender was in illegal possession of a firearm when he shot a 23-year-old male and a 29-year old male. Both victims were treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The offender pleaded not guilty to the charges today and was remanded by the Court. No new appearance dates have been scheduled at this time.
