Brooklyn Doctor Pleads Guilty to Felony Tax Fraud

June 29, 2012

ALBANY, NY – May 15, 2012 - District Attorney P. David Soares announced that RANGA KRISHNA, 48, of Englewood, NJ, pleaded guilty to (1) count of Tax Fraud in the Third Degree, a Class “D” Felony, before the Honorable Stephen W. Herrick this morning in Albany County Court.

In 2009, the Albany Office of the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance opened up a civil tax audit of KRISHNA and his Brooklyn neurology clinic, TOTAL NEURO CARE P.C.  On June 28, 2010, in connection with that audit, KRISHNA submitted four false invoices purportedly from his former medical partner to justify his deduction of $669,000 in false business expenses for TOTAL NEURO CARE P.C. in tax year 2004.  As a result of KRISHNA’s submission of those false documents, the Tax Department allowed the false expenses and KRISHNA evaded $47,040 in New York State income taxes. KRISHNA’s fraud came to light after a joint investigation by the Tax Department and the Office of the Albany County District Attorney.

KRISHNA faces up to 1 to 3 years in State Prison when he is sentenced on July 24, 2012. He paid $47,040 in restitution to the Tax Department at the time of his plea and has been ordered to pay an additional fine of $94,080 at the time of his sentencing.

Assistant District Attorney Benjamin Clark of the Financial Crimes Unit handled the prosecution of this case.
