Crimes such as burglary, robbery and larceny are often crimes of opportunity. The unattended vehicle, the unoccupied residence, the distracted traveler: all present attractive targets for the criminal opportunist.  In many cases, therefore, vigilance is the best defense.  For example, if you are traveling at night, bring along a companion, remain on well-lit streets, and don’t get preoccupied with things like cells phones.  Remember, while you are texting, the thief is plotting.  In other words, use common sense.  Don’t leave your car running and unattended.  Always lock your doors.  Be aware of your surroundings.  If you are going to be away from home, have someone collect your mail, turn on the lights, and take other steps to discourage the would-be burglar.  Doing so could possibly prevent you from becoming a victim of crime.
