Guilty Plea in Cohoes Shooting Case

ALBANY, NY - District Attorney P. David Soares announced today that JOSEPH EVANS JR., 20, of Cohoes, pleaded guilty to (1) Count of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree, a Class C Armed Violent Felony, before the Honorable Andra Ackerman in Albany County Court this morning.

On June 30, 2020, at around 2:15 P.M., members of the Cohoes Police responded to the area of Lansing and Schuyler Streets for a report of a male who had been shot. Upon arrival they found 18-year-old Tyshawn Daniels lying on the ground with apparent gunshot wounds. The victim was transported to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.

An investigation uncovered the involvement of EVANS in the shooting and based on the facts and circumstances of the incident, he was subsequently charged with illegal possession of a weapon. EVANS plea of guilty today fully satisfies other open matters pending in Albany County.

EVANS faces 9 ½ years in State Prison, to be followed by 5 years of Post-Release Supervision, when sentenced on August 12, 2021.

Assistant District Attorney David Szalda and Assistant District Attorney Bryanne Perlanski handled the prosecution of this case.
