41-year-old Michael Johnson of Albany was sentenced to a determinate term of 15 years in State Prison, followed by 5 years of post-release supervision.

Albany, NY – 41-year-old Michael Johnson of Albany was sentenced to a determinate term of 15 years in State Prison, followed by 5 years of post-release supervision, before the Hon. Andra Ackerman in Albany County Court this afternoon.

Today’s sentencing follows his November 29, 2023 plea of guilty to One Count of Attempted Murder in the Second Degree. The indictment alleged that on or about August 29, 2023, while in the area of Second Street in the City of Albany, Johnson attempted to cause the death of another individual. Specifically, the defendant is accused of shooting the victim.

The victim, Charles Sojourner, said:

“On August 29, 2023, in front of his children, Michael Johnson walked up to me, and fired at me multiple times. A man I did not know, did not have a history of conflict or violence with. He did not even know my name. He attempted to take my life over trivial circumstances… I wonder if the assailant ever considered how he would contribute to the statistics of children who did not have fathers in their lives… Ironically, his thoughtless actions will ultimately keep him from his own children.”

Assistant District Attorneys Nicholas Pittari and Jennifer McCanney, the bureau chief of the Local Courts Unit, handled the prosecution of this case.
